It bugs me that I can’t seem to muster up the inspiration to write much here lately.

Blog-Worthy? Reason Number 2

I know that this stuff isn’t exactly Shakespeare here, but I’ll keep writing this blog for as long as I can if I get even the faintest glimmer that it’s entertaining for someone. I received a very nice “letter to the editor” the other day from a reader just thanking me for writing. I know over the years I have stumbled across countless other sites that have inspired or (at the very least) nudged me towards creating this hulking behemoth of words and images you see before you. While I could never appropriately seek out and thank the hundreds of people who have kept pushing me along, it doesn’t mean I’m not thankful. So, instead I keep writing here and hope to do what I can do with just that effort… keep writing and hopefully offer a glimmering reflection of that same borrowed inspiration that has helped me, passed along, shared, for whatever it’s worth.

Running. Reading. Writing.

Writing is sometimes turning off the filter between the narrative in your brain and the fingers typing on the keyboard. It doesn't guarantee good results, but it gets things done.

I (re)learned the meaning of fifty-thousand words. It's bigger than you might imagine when you just say it without feeling it.

Not a Working Title Anymore

Forty thousand words done as of this afternoon, and I think I can see the end in sight. Well.. the end of the push to fifty-thousand words for this NaNoWriMo thing. I’m definitely NOT gonna have a finished novel at the end of this month. I’m probably looking at more like seventy or eighty thousand when I get through the story, so long as I’m careful not to sprint towards the end. There is a lot left to do. On that note, seeing as how I’m 80% towards my November goal, I actually picked a new title for the novel. Yeah, the other one was a working title, something to toss up on the website when they asked you what your book was called. My new title is a bit of a mouthful, but it will make more sense if you read the book. Bound: Or, the Programmatic Evaluation of a Valid Expression is a metaphor for the ways in which technology can blind us from our humanity, obscuring the world around us and forcing us to see things in a way that lacks nuance. It is about understanding that information can control us as much as it can free us. It is about finding balance in a binary world.

I’m going to (in honest modestly) say it’s coming out as some of the best damn shit I’ve ever put on paper.

Monkey see, monkey do. I challenged Claire to write this month, too. I suggested that rather than for her to try to hit fifty-thousand words, however (which may be a little challenging for an eight year old, to say the least) that she write one page of a story every day this month. She jumped on the call, and has so far penned two and half full pages of a little “book” she’s now writing. Her total is coming in at a little over 300 words so far. Proportionally speaking, to her age at least, I think she’s doing better than her old man.

# Baylee the Bee, selling a small but steady number of copies, is now available on iBooks for iPhone, too. Check out the link in the sidebar.
