  • weekend wrap three

How the heck is it already the middle of May? Didn’t we just do Christmas last week? I mean. C’mon!

Next weekend is the long weekend, but this past few days have been a bit of a hectic hot mess. That’s okay, I guess. Everyone needs a hectic weekend here and there.

    This past weekend I…

Alas, it is the week of the Big Show. The kid is performing as Rosie in her high school musical production of Mamma Mia starting tomorrow, so it’s been us doing late night pick ups at the theatre, transfers to other important things, and on and on and on.

I met up with my former boss for lunch on Friday. It was pretty much the weekend for her. It started out as a chat message asking her if it was still cool I used her as a reference, and next thing I knew I was picking her up at her mechanic’s appointment and we were chowing down on a local Indian buffet.

The upcoming show has us doing a few theatre parent chores, specifically we got put in charge of the concession, so it was off to Costco for our semi-annual visit and to score a bunch of concession-sized snacks to sell. Saturday morning is not the day for that, but our options were limited.

This spun around and did a one-eighty and by mid-afternoon we were out in Sherwood Park at a dance competition. Oh, that’s right. In the middle of the high school main stage final week of rehearsals we still had dance choreography competitions to work around. Though the final sadness of it being her last ever didn’t ever really set in, what with the hectic hot mess and all.

We stopped for dinner on the way home and it was… ok. Less ok for the price, but I’ll save that rant for another post.

Mother’s day morning we made crepes before I rushed off to do my regular Sunday morning run club. Ten klicks sounds less impressive mid-spring when everyone else is training for marathons and such.

We capped the mother’s day events off with a lap of the local dog park and a chill stroll in the masses and throngs with the same idea.

Oh, and I paid for my business license. Woot. Excitement abounds.

    And that was that.

  • weekend wrap two

Technically it’s Tuesday, but with yesterday being election day in Canada that Monday really blurred into the other days. In my continued efforts to be as pedestrian and basic as my pride will allow here once again is a wrap up of this past unofficially extended long weekend’s activities.

    This past weekend, I…

Completed the saga of our broke ass hot water heater. The new unit was installed and after flushing the pipes for a couple days to ensure that we weren’t going to cram up the new part with crud, replaced the faucet head. Both hot water and water pressure are at optimal levels now.

Held my member of parliament’s feet to the fire after I spotted and reported a minor (but rules are rules) election sign infraction around our polling station.

Brought my weekly running distance total up over twenty-five klicks by rounding it off with a great Sunday run. I also happened to hand my willingness to volunteer as needed with our local run club to KB who is the area manager round these parts.

Attended a duo of dance competition performances and watched the kid bring in top marks for her second show, much to her own and everyone else’s surprise. Apparently, according to the mom contingent, the number was a little rough even just the week before and they were worried it wouldn’t be compeition-ready. But they locked in a “diamond” and celebrations ensued.

Finally picked up some new coffee filters for my aeropress.

Took the dog to the off-leash park for the first time this season.

Drank my first slurpee of the season, too.

And, yeah, that’s about enough for one chilly April weekend, no?

  • weekend wrap one

I write this blog for myself as much as others, so there is a piece of me that will be unapologetically using it as I would use, say, a public bullet journal.  As such, I kinda feel the need to start a little series, formally and officially, where I just remind myself that I actually got shit done this weekend.

A guy’s gotta take some pride in his own accomplishments, no?

    This past weekend, I…

Attended two family dinners, including one where I somehow managed to fit in helping my father-in-law purchase and set up a new computer and get his beloved genealogy hobby back on track. Also, finally delivered the mirror I picked up at Ikea for my sister.

    Voted in the federal election.

Completed reading two novels, which to some might seem like a quiet weekday evening accomplishment… but my track record with reading these days is weak.

Watched the son of a friend compete in a figure skating tournament.

Demoed my game development project to the one guy who might actually have something useful to add to it code-wise, and he had some positive things to say about it as I fed him homemade fries and chicken fingers.

Ran more than ten klicks in one sesh, which is the furthest I’ve run this whole month thanks to some nasty chest infection which seems to be 99 percent resolved.

Reached the five week mark in my Duolingo Japanese lessons without either cheating or using streak freezes or other sneaky ways of skipping a day without it counting against me.

Completed and submitted my homework for my fifth of seven courses in my continuing education program and got, hopefully, one step closer to professional certification.

    Was that all, huh?

  • Ready for the Weekend

How do you prepare for your weekend?

Do you pick away at your to-do list over the week, so that when you catch up with Friday night you are free and clear, ready to enjoy everything? Sure, this means that you’ve saved up all your down-time for those two precious days, but when Saturday and Sunday arrive you have nothing but relaxing to accomplish, right?

Or, do you wait for those first few hours of the weekend and get everything done all at once on Saturday morning? The weekend is still young, you’re full of energy, and you can just sink in and get the work done before lunch on your first weekend day. By the time you break you’ve still got a day and a half ahead of you to rest and enjoy.

Maybe you’re a take-it-as-it-comes weekend warrior? A chore here, a task there, and strike another item of the list then kick your feet up for a while until you feel ready to take on the next one. There’s no sense in being efficient about it, right? Weekends aren’t a job, they’re your life and you can take it as you please.

Ideally you are not a procrastinator, but I can see how tempting it might be to put everything off until Sunday evening. Are you one of those folks? Enjoy every moment you can until the last possible second when you figure you may as well get back into the week by doing some yard and housework before bed on Sunday.

Or perhaps you’re a little like me, and it’s a bit of each and a different take on the to-do list every time a new Saturday rolls around.
