In August 2017 after months of prep we found ourselves at the trail head of the mostly famous Berg Lake trail.

We got a little turned around in NYC, but it's hard to get truly lost with an iPhone and Google Maps in your pocket.

Sometimes I Should Just Skip Lunch

I thought the story of the day was going to be my sideline non-participation and otherwise indifferent gawking at the taxi-v-uber protest at city hall, but after skulking away unaccosted by either team, I had one of those blalrgh!$ghgoh#ahshit! moments not half a block away. This old probably-homeless guy was walking slowly through the bustle not a dozen meters away from me suddenly did an inelegant and wobbly little two-step that didn’t involve his feet and he very quickly went from vertical to horizontal, with a three-point landing that didn’t involve his hands. Then, just for extra blalrg&whu**!@uuhj, promptly seized right there on the sidewalk. And even in the crowd of dozens of onlookers, I was the first on the scene… though fortunately not last. Details aside, it was one of those (fortunately) rare moments that leaves you (a) shaken and a little adrenaline flushed, and (b) wondering how you got this far along in your life so woefully under-prepared to be much more use than as the “strongest one there” during an actual, random emergency. How was your lunch break?

When I'm out camping, I do wish it was as easy to make a good cup of coffee as it was to steep a simple cup of tea. Half an hour of effort for some mediocre brew, but sooooo worth it.
