I was just going over my training plan for the next 12 weeks. I made the mistake of summing the planned distances between today’s upcoming nine-and-a-half klick jaunt and the taper runs leading into New Years and the now-upcoming race. Total? Over six hundred klicks to run between now and then. Technically that’s more than I ran in all of 2011, and about half of what I ran in all of 2012… in a quarter the time. Or, put another way, roughly an average of 8 klicks per day for the rest of the year. I suppose I’d better get started, eh?
I’ll take the risk of buzz-marketing a silly little game I’ve had running in my browser for about a week now: Cooke Clicker. If nothing else I’ll give it a nickle-worth of free publicity because it’s provided me with at least that much worth of amusement. Premise: make cookies. And then spend cookies to automate your cookie making process. The game starts with by manually clicking a few dozen cookies with your mouse until you’ve created a process that lets you sit back and reap the rewards, buy more tools, and watch your cookie count exponentially rise. My best so far is in the tens of trillions of cookies. And I’m sure I’m just getting started.
Tempted. Oh. So. Tempted. If weren’t going to be away for nearly a full week sometime in November, it would almost be a no-brainer. And I’ve got a really good idea stirring in my head, too, bubbling there below the surface, brewing and cooking and ready to be plotted out into the digital pages of my word processor. I’ve even got some motivational rumblings in there, too. *grrrr* And I’m even sorta feeling up to the challenge again after skipping the last two years. Ultimately, I’ll probably skip again: time-constraints and work-pressures and running-schedules being what they are. Regrettably. But I’m tempted. Oh. So. Tempted. Someone give me a really good reason either way, and maybe it will tip the balance. Comment?
Leading into the Halloween season, Claire and I have been watching this show on the Food Network called “Halloween Wars” where teams compete to build elaborate spooky cake creations from a mix of candy, cake, pumpkins and other sugary baked goods. Claire loves it. She focuses her attention like a laser, and has been following up after with some very astute and freakishly mature analysis of the designs. I mean, for a six year old to be commenting on the things she is commenting on… well, I’m wondering if I should be tapping into some of that interest and directing it into something. Like, maybe I should buy her a candy thermometer and a bag of white sugar. Just sayin…
Regular readers know I’m always tweaking and tuning this blog. I’ve been doing just that for the last couple evenings, making use of the WordPress “post format” features and creating some new post styles to complement my recent, regular long-format articles. For example, this is an “aside” which will be a short post, the entire contents of which will show up in the headline thread. It still has a page (which you can get to by clicking on the title) so that if you are just-so-inclined you can still comment. But you won’t need to click in just to read the full post. I’m thinking it will be great for short thoughts and (hopefully) more frequent updates. There are a couple more “formats” that I’ll introduce as the opportunity arises. Comment and let me know what you think!
Slashdot posted an article about some LEGO.nut who just happens to work at the University of Alberta. There must be something in the water. Dad, do you know this guy? He teaches in the faculty of agriculture…??? Speaking of… I think THIS is going on the wedding registry. Or at least the next poll I have on this website.
