The interesting thing about listening to the radio with Claire each morning is that she’s really started actually paying attention… and asking questions about things she doesn’t quite grasp. For example, this morning there was a story about a seven year old transgender girl whose parents are at odds with the school district over their kid who is uncomfortable going into either of the washrooms which are firmly labeled “boys” or “girls.” Both choices present a challenge for someone involved, obviously, and it’s a complex issue that society needs to work through… particularly when it comes to little kids. “What are they even talking about?” Claire asks me as the story progresses. And my (relatively trivial) challenge as a dad is to interpret this, on the fly, through a lens another seven year old can understand. I’ll take her “oh… okay” as a win.
