a mash-up of email & world building
I once had the experience of finally meeting for the first time a pair of colleagues with whom I’d worked with exclusively through email for over a year. Their reaction to me, though at the time of this I was a mere twenty-seven years old, was a sort_of “gee, whiz…. from your email we figured you were, like, a sixty year old man.”
It was not the first time I’d noticed that email was a kind of digital mask we wear, but it was one of the most striking.
The result of such a realization, for me at least as I’m sure with many others too, is that I’ve long been very conscious of the illusions we construct whilst communicating electronically, through email or social media, text messages or participating in forums. It’s not necessarily a simple thing to control well, but it’s an easy habit to stumble into.
