One month ’til Xmas: Guess it’s time to decorate the blog for the holidays.
It’s now been a couple of years since I came off that little blogging sabbatical I took through most of 2010 and “reloaded” this blog into the initial stages of what you see today.
In that time I’ve made a lot of changes: I’ve refocused my writing, refreshed my template, and re-invigorated my topics, all the while narrowing my efforts and generally increasing my readership. Not to mention the fact I (mostly quietly) crossed the eight-hundred thousand word mark last week.
I sometimes write about how I don’t really care if anyone is reading or not. That remains true… mostly. The primary purpose of this blog remains now and forever as a kind of extended letter to the future, a history of our lives as they were lived, for Claire to know about things or anyone else who might legitimately be interested to read upon.
But at the same time, I’ll freely admit, it’s nice to be read in a more contemporary sense, too. It’s nice to hear from you and interact with you, whoever you are. There’s that, too.
There is something else I’ve been thinking about for a while, all tied into the notion of readership. See, the name “8r4d reloaded” — what this blog was know as up until today — was merely a place holder. If it seems like I change the name of this blog a lot, then guess what: you’re not crazy.
It lately has been renamed almost annually.
…they might just be boring.
Every name has it’s flaws, of course. They can be too long. They can lack description. They can imply something not meant to be implied. Or they might just be boring.
I try to avoid these things, but I somehow always stumble upon an unseen obstacle that leaves me wondering how soon it is before my readers get frustrated at the roulette of nomenclature I use to denote my writings.
It’s a risk to change, but the previous name was flawed in two senses; First, it was intended to convey the notion that I was opening the doors to a shuttered blog, a sense that was temporary then and outdated now. Second, it didn’t have any meaning for anyone but me. My vague, often-queried-upon gaming handle — 8r4d — connected to the notion of being “reloaded” had no strong connection to anything much any more.
…it’s a little vague, it’s a little nuanced, but I like it.
Thus, I’ve decided to rename this blog again.
If you are reading it now, you can likely see by the branding tweaks that I rolled out said name-change earlier today. The new name: “8 Clicks from Nowhere” — it’s a little vague, it’s a little nuanced, but I like it. And I think it is not only left wide open to interpretation around my topics — running, photography, blogging, gaming, et cetera — but I think it also opens it up to be more of a “title” for this site and less of a… “huh?”
So… yeah. There you go. Will it increase the number of people reading? Who can say. Or, does it even matter? But either way, it might give me a few more months of inspiration before I wonder again.
Along with the name change I also reverted the URL back to just blog.8r4d.com and tweaked a few other things. Most everything else will be staying the same… for now. Let me know if you encounter any bugs… or even just what you think.
It snowed again last night. I went for a walk amongst those sort of flakes that fall like bits of cotton candy, and in the cone of light dropping out of each lamppost seem to drift and swirl in a surreal four-dimensional ballet of brownian physics.
And speaking of bits and pieces flying everywhere… We’re nearly done building our jigsaw puzzle. It has taken quite a long time — in jigsaw terms — but another couple hours of work should do the trick. I am getting tired of hunching over the board though.
And speaking of not getting enough exercise… There is officially more Christmas baking in this house than can safely be consumed before the holidays end. In fact, we could exclusively eat holiday treats for the next week and not require any other food to satisfy our appetites. That’s apart from the unhealthy bit, of course. That said, we’ll need to steal a few folks recipes for our own baking next year. Yum!
And speaking of scribbling notes and pillaging ideas… I recently had a few thoughts cross my mind and gel into substance with regard to this particular writing project. I’ve been looking for threads to tie through the metaverse I’m constructing, and I discovered another interesting idea. But I’m not going to share it. That would ruin the surprise.
And speaking of ruining the magic… I’ve pretty much had my fill of holiday music now. Two or three weeks is usually plenty. We can stop playing it now. Thanks.
And speaking of thinking into the new year… You may have noticed that I updated the template for this blog. In fact, unless you read these entries exclusively as an RSS feed — and this isn’t some ancient, archived post — you’re currently looking at the new template. I have tried it on a couple operating systems in a variety of browsers — and it seems to work a-okay. But if it goes wonky for you, let me know. It’s still kinda BETAish.
And speaking of blog archives… I was reminded of my sister’s driving adventures (recounted in this two-year-old post) while flipping through my archives this morning.
And speaking of family, driving, and the like… it’s that time of year again, as of today. You know what I’m talking about. Now, where did I leave my rum-and-nog?
Today was my last day of work before the holidays. As I told everyone at the office, I may not deserve it, but I’ve earned it and I’m taking it. I’ll be back sometime in January. And, if nothing else, call it round-two of the paternity leave.
So the question is this. I’m thinking of doing some tweaking of this blog. Now, that I’ve been eagerly writing and posting, writing and posting — and with a few weeks of quasi-free time — I thought I might find an hour or two to work on the template.
So, this is your chance. If you are a regular reader of this blog you get all this great (though rambling) content for free. So, the cheque has come due: tell me what you think. What do you like? What drives you crazy? What do you think should be changed?
Color? Layout? Link bar? Images? What?
Usually, I just go ahead and surprise — and this is not to say I’m going to blindly implement everything that is suggested — but I thought I’d go to my readership and see what I should do this time. So? Comment, already.
I’m only writing, because after a brutally invigorating evening of climbing I can happily report that not only did I challenge and obliterate a particularly difficult five-eight wall tonight, I blazed up my first five-nine! My mom would be so proud — if only she had the slightest clue what I was talking about.
Speaking of family, as I write this Derek is in the process of sending us some pictures from the future — or at least from another time zone, in day I won’t reach until sometime tomorrow. Apparently he attended a family reunion today, tomorrow, yesterday… I give up.
And for those not visiting my sister’s webpage regularly: I finally finished those aesthetic changes I had been planning to amend it with. I’m sure she was sick of the “bruised” black and blue theme, just as much as I was. Hopefully she’s not too bitter that I updated it: I don’t think she’s noticed yet. At least, she hasn’t called me to yell.
