That Eight Day

Friday, August 8th, 2008

I talk, but when it really comes down to it I don’t believe in luck. So, today being the eighth day, of the eighth month, of the two-thousand and eight — a day, obviously, peppered with “lucky eights” as per Chinese culture — doesn’t really have much meaning for me beyond the arbitrary confluence [...]

Bill see. Bill see six one. One six one!

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

The result of sending a letter with your concerns about copyright to your member of parliament and various other influential ministers in federal government is NOT that they listen to your concerns, but rather that they put you on their mailing list and send you propaganda and notifications of exactly how they are ignoring your [...]

End of March-ish.

Monday, March 31st, 2008

9. My pirate coffee mug was broken upon arrival, but rather than shipping it back I glued it together and filled it with dirt and seeds, and set it in my window at work.  This morning there is definite sprouting going on. Yarr!
8. Claire has a new repertoire of tricks since I last wrote.  These [...]

Free Day

Friday, February 29th, 2008

You know you’ve been writing a blog for a long time when you can go back and reference the post you wrote last February twenty-ninth. Speaking of free days, last February twenty-ninth (one thousand, four hundred and sixty one days ago) I was in Banff, in the mountains, at a neuromuscular science conference representing my [...]

ich bin ein Vancouverite

Thursday, January 15th, 2004

I wanted to write about something, express some angst-filled zeitgeist into words that fell onto the page as if they had asked to be there, maybe not by me, but at least by someone with means to patter away on a crumbed-up keyboard. The words were hanging there, angry thoughts about Mars or weapons [...]

just couldnt resist

There is something about history books that makes so many people cringe. The interesting thing is that this reputation just used-to-be true. There are a whole lot of really good history books out there. For example, Karin bought me a book on mathematical history, a (literally) rivetting read on the story behind trying to solve Fermats Last Theorem. Sounds dry, but anyone with any (even vague) interest in science would read it like the latest legal drama from whats-his-name.

winddown from the weekend

Monday, July 14th, 2003

…and points of interest:
Also know as, mental states I am enjoying today…
a — being herein fundamentally wowwed by Pirates of the Caribbean which is a swashbucklingly good pirate tale that seemed to top out the boxoffices this weekend. For those who didn’t scavenge the net for oddly mishapen reviews of the flick, I found [...]

STRIKE THAT NERVE. AGAIN! AGAIN!

Thursday, October 3rd, 2002

Jess queries: …whatever happened to the copy of Disco Dwayne and the Time Pirates that I thought I had somewhere on my hard drive…. Brad, maybe you know something about that?
Brad looks shocked and says: What?! Are you implying that I have been pillaging your hard drive looking at all your personal files? [...]

RAIN

Sunday, March 10th, 2002

I preface again with news of rain: I imagine that this may become a common theme for my musings here in Vancouver. But I suppose that this topic could get a little soggy, so I might try to become more creative as the days pass. However, for now it will have to do.
As [...]
