I spent a few minutes in the bookstore on my lunch break looking for inspiration, but finally decided to take my cue from the chance sighting of a local CBC radio personality I saw wandering through the mall. CBC’s Canada Reads book face off begins this week and a different Canadian celebrity, Tahmoh Penikett, who you may or may not recognize from the cast of Battlestar Galactica, is defending a dystopian near future science fiction novel:
Brad’s Book Club 2018 (Book: 2 / 20)
American War: A Novel by Omar El Akkad
So, I’m now reading American War: A Novel by Omar El Akkad, who as far as I can tell is one of my adopted countryman living in the states.
I’ll admit that I was looking for something a little lighter, but went the other way on my next pick, mostly because of (a) the fact that I kinda feel in the moment reading something that’s part of the Canada Reads list and (b) the reviews look like something right up my alley.
From what I can tell, it’s a fictional account of the next American civil war, a war over scarce resources, land, oil, energy set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing climate.
Hmmm… Now that I put it that way, I hardly wonder how this made it to the top of a CBC book list, huh? Read on.
