It’s January so that means it’s time for me to put away my 2017 todo list and start working on my 2018 catalog of project plans. One of my resolutions — though I only call it a resolution because it’s new years — was to read more novels.

The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu
So here we go: and I’m jumping into this new year of reading starting with the sequel to a novel I enjoyed over a year ago called The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu. The sequel, called The Dark Forest, is actually the second in trilogy, all originally written in China and translated to English.
I can’t say much about the sequel without spoiling the plot, but the basic aspect is this: the story is essentially a science fiction tale of a nearby alien society that is working to slowly invade Earth. Using an advanced technology that dimensionally unfolds a single entangled particle they have been able to encode a super-computer inside that has been sent to to Earth ahead of the invading aliens and is able to disrupt our ability to invent the necessary technology that would allow us to defend ourselves. From what I recall, it was a weirdly complex story of human loyalty, sociology and ingenuity mixed into a narrative plot unlike anything I’d read recently.
The sequel continues where the first novel ended, and I’ve officially started reading it as my first novel of 2018.
