Twenty-fifteen: I’m going to do something I’ve been putting off for far too long. I’m going to get serious about reading. And I’m going to write about it…
I used to read a whole lot more. I used to devour books. It’s a hobby without much sparkle or pizzazz, I know. But it’s an important thing… literacy… imagination… literature… thinking about big ideas.
I used to read a whole lot more, but I’ve become a television guy. I kill too many evenings rewatching mediocre sitcoms and over-acted dramas in high definition, streaming over Netflix. Often there is a computer on my lap, and I go to bed thinking I haven’t really actually accomplished much for my leisure hours. Though, it’s not really about accomplishing anything. It’s about feeling mentally nourished. Like one is living off of purely mental dessert buffet and skipping the salad course.
Couple that with the fact that I want to write more.
Couple it with the fact that my brain is feeling so scattered.
Couple that with the fact that I have a daughter who looks at reading like it’s a chore… homework… punishment… something she needs to get through before she’s allowed to flip on the television.
I’ve been reading. I picked up a couple books over the last month… books I’d started months ago… a year ago, even… and I finished them off.
But it’s almost a new year. It’s almost a New Years. And resolutions… new projects… big ideas… these things blossom out of the flip of the calendar page or the spinning of the annual odometer to the next number.
So, in 2015: more reading. More writing about what I’m reading. And probably a little less television to boot.
Goal: Twenty five books read and reviewed by December 31, 2015… GO!
