Once more it is June. Again. And again I embark upon that epic effort of daily blogging, take three, wherein I call upon myself for a kind of rambling focus, picking from a list of daily topics, and with neither planning nor advance writing, strive to pepper this blog with the free-thought, free-writing wonder that is another one of Those 30 Posts in June. Today, that post just happens to be:
June 27th // Something You Want To Win
I’ve been a pretty poor player lately.
Just to jog your memory…
A “Hackable Me” post is a few words on incremental personal self-improvement: a personal hack to better myself. I’m actually very skeptical when it comes to the kind of DIY, fixer-upper, read-this-book-to-change-your-life sort of self-improvement one normally thinks about. On the other hand I tend to consider that (a) publicly scrutinized goals and (b) introspective evaluation of those goals through words tends to lead to making me a better person. This is just a thing to do with that.
See, the thing is I’m something of a fan of gamification. About a year and a half ago now I jumped into a kind-of gamification of my own life –my fitness and health goals, if I’m being specific– and, well, it worked.
But gamification takes effort, too. It’s tough. It’s tough to set goals and stick to them. And, frankly, I’ve been phoning it in lately. This game of Hackable Me I’ve been telling myself that I’m still playing… actually, I’m not gonna be winning any time soon.
It’s been more like: Do not pass Go. Checkmate. Insufficient victory points. All your base are belong to us.
it’s been a half-effort
I’m still playing, logging stupid-quantities of kilometers and burning obscene numbers of calories, but if I’m being honest with myself it’s been a half-effort.
So, here’s the thing: as these sorts of efforts tend to go, a significant date approaches and I make a public vow. And seeing as July first approaches and with it the start of a new month and the mid-point of the year, I’m going to put my brain into hack mode once more. I’m going to win another game of hackable me: we’ll start with July, double down on August, and go from there.
Deep breath. Ready. Steady…
