Camper Girl

Much to everyone’s amazement, the little Claire Bear took to camping like her namesake, rooting the bushes for tasty morsels and hibernating until well past seven in the morning — and she put down roots in the wilderness as if she’d been born there. The kid, her dad is pleased to announce, is a bona fide wood nymph and if this past weekend was any indication will likely keep her mom and pop company on many future trips into the wilderness. Of course, I brought the camera along, and you can click to see a whole album of random camping shots:

True, we did have a cozy camper to park ourselves away from the harsher elements. And true, the flush toilets were a nice bonus. But if ever there was a kid who wanted to stick her hands into the dirt, pluck greenery from the trees, and taste every rock she encountered — then Claire is that kid. And that’s fine by me.

Though, arguably, we might have got a first word: “hot” particularly after Karin and I said it so many times with a nearby campfire. “Hot!” Is there an echo in the house?
