The Stand

From Wednesday, April 9th, 2008, so about 237 days ago, [Popularity: 4%]

For those sipping on the few and far between bits of information that leak from random sources regarding the post-sixth month development of our daughter, there is likely to be some disappointment. Admittedly, I’ve been somewhat weak in blogging the mundane, and my presence on the usual social networks over the past month has amounted to accumulated seconds (maybe a minute or two) at best.

So I thought I’d take a moment to share, particularly after this morning’s cool little episode. If you don’t care, skip it. This is a doting grandparent update for the most part. To date, the bear is capable and/or determined to:

:: feed herself. Yes, she will wrest the spoon from we silly parents who apparently can’t do it just right. The result is often a colourful mash of food across her face, but she’ll be darned to let us help much more than reloading the spoon.

:: roll over. And while this should have been a developmental milestone from a month or so back, we are not exactly forcing her into any sort of mobility. You know all that so-called child-proofing? Yeah, well, it’s not quite ready.

:: stand. Admittedly this tends to be the kind of standing where she INSISTS on grabbing your hands and hoisting herself onto wobbly feet. But this morning, Karin had the bear gripped to a small stool where she was standing for a minute or two otherwise unsupported. Then she did the neat little trick of flailing her arms out sideways and balancing on two feet. I know, you’ve been doing that trick for years. But she’s new.

Aside: I’ve added a new category called “critters” that refers to, basically, the antics of our various dependents. I was using “babies” for a while, but after six months it’s tough to label Claire as a baby, per se. The “dog” category still makes sense for Spark by herself, but the two are starting to interact a bit more. And “fatherhood” usually refers to stuff I do as a bewildered dad. I don’t add many new categories these days, so I just thought I’d share.
