The Girl and the DoggyDog Show

If there was ever any question that we produced a dog-person, it was not refuted by our little yesterday-adventure. Sunday was the first official day of Sparkle’s obedience classes. The four of us — Karin, Claire, Sparkle, and myself — loaded into the car and drove to the pup’s doggy daycare (who were running the show) for Basic I obedience school.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Where usually the girl goes for a car ride, emerges into a crowded room full of strangers, and commences a stimulus-overload crying fit, on this particular occasion she chose (strapped to my chest in the Baby Bjorn carrier apparatus) to patiently ogle and ponder the twelve dogs running around playing and barking (before class) and slowly figuring out some routine walking commands (during class). An hour of dangling in a strange place would normally mean an inextinguishable crying fit, but either the dog-filled distraction or (as Karin speculated later) the fact not a single person got in the girl’s face made for a happy, smiling Claire who was more than happy to watch and enjoy the learning process.

That said, while Sparkle is not quite the star pupil, she is something of a teacher’s pet (no pun intended) having long since won the affections of the daycare owners-come-instructors who used her on more than one occasion to demonstrate a technique. We didn’t learn much for a first class besides some basic heeling and control commands, and nothing Spark couldn’t get her tail around with ease.

Heh heh. We took Mabel for basic training a few months ago….that first meeting-with-other-dogs experience can be a bit harrowing….especially when your dog is determined to be top dog. She is taking an agility class now, and loving it. When Sparkle finishes obedience, i highly recommend it….she would probably be good at it. :) And Claire would likely find it fascinating and funny, too. :)

The daycare/school teaches a whole series of classes. We wanted to do something a little more advanced, but Basic I is apparently a pre-requisite.

I can understand that. Sparkle will have a blast in the advanced classes. Whippets are good runners, I think, right?
