text to the future

From Monday, January 7th, 2008, so about 330 days ago, [Popularity: 11%]

One week into 2008 and this is only my second post. Were you one of those who was checking every day to see if I’d resumed the daily posts? Do you miss me yet?

Alas, all is not lost. I’ve been writing — as always — just not here, very much. In fact I would almost — though hesitantly — call it a productive weekend with that regard. A few thousand words, in fact.

I don’t have much to say other than I wanted to pass along a link to a very cool text editor I found. I found it completely by accident, and the story goes something like this:

Ahem…

So, I’ve pretty much decided on a Mac. I’m going to switch sometime this year. I’ve been contemplating such for a few years now (yes, years) and with the increasing need for a “creative” porta-machine for my writing, photography, and design stuff, I think the only real option is moving to a slick new Mac Book Pro. (Perhaps after the upcoming announcements?) The clincher came yesterday when, while trolling Slashdot, I found an article on Scrivener, a Mac-only bit of author-geared word processing software, endorsed by one of my short-listed favorite authors Michael Marshall Smith.

Drool!

But, yeah. No Windows version. And while that drove the final nail in the metaphorical coffin and solidified the conviction to dump Windows, it didn’t solve the actual “need money to buy Mac” problem — and thus the lack of access to aforementioned software.

In a mostly fruitless search, I did not find a replacement but did manage to find JDarkRoom, a slick and fast full-screen text editor. The premise is that to do any sort of serious writing, modern word processors and operating systems are a distraction. The solution: a blank screen with a very retro, text-only interface, so when you type you see NOTHING but what you are typing. It’s free (donation-ware) and small to install. I wanted to share that because I know a few of you out there might find it useful. I’ve already defaulted it on text docs. Nice! Check it out.

I found WriteRoom (the Mac version of JDarkRoom) a few months ago and I love it. It used to coordinate with WordPress so I could hammer out posts in WR and have them magically appear on my Write page, but something went sideways with WordPress 2.3 and it doesn’t work anymore. But as someone who is easily distracted, I find it very quiet.

Yeah, that one was mentioned in the article too. It does seem true that Macs get the best creative software. As for WP2.3 — it added some nice stuff, but I think it broke more than it fixed in this blog. I can empathize.

I can’t believe it! After all these years. Wonders never cease!

PS: Nice family photo…when did you sneak that one in?

Why is everyone so surprised when I say that I want to switch to Mac? The only negatives I’ve ever claimed about the system were back a decade ago when they were a company two minutes from midnight — and their lame operating system was over-hyped and tied to expensive hardware. But I’ve been planning to bail on XP since before we moved into our house. The only reasons we still use Windows are (a) there are a few bits of software upon which we still rely (though the number can be counted on one hand now), (b) it’s what I need to use for work and like to use for games (but one PC in the house, a couple consoles, and a company laptop should see us through), and (c) the PC hardware tends to be much cheaper when you need a new computer on a tight budget (which is where I now turn to crack my piggy bank.) In fact, our old laptop has been Windows-free for months and current sits in our kitchen running Ubuntu Linux — great for checking email, balancing our budget, and checking recipes. Our household has four iPods. And I’ve been saying for years that OS X is very slick. But, I guess I haven’t learned the secret handshake yet.

    I’m not surprised… I like Macs too…

  6. 8r4d Says:

Derek likes Mac’s too, but only when he wants a slush. Actually, the fact that Shannon and I actually agree on something is the most surprising thing about this post.

  7. 8r4d Says:

On another note, ultimately the decision is going to come down to high-end MacBook versus low-end MacBook Pro… any thoughts from you Mac’ers out there?

  8. Shannon Says:

Where I work only admin get the high end macs… thus I have no opinion! But, we also agree on things other than Macs, such as rubber duckies and how educational or not they actually are!

  9. 8r4d Says:

What size is your screen then?

And,… ah yes, rubber duckies. I’m officially taking up the role of part-time consumer advocate against over-educated toys… that is, toys that claim they are PhDs when in reality they are barely high school graduates. Are you alluding to our Christmastime conversation? Or did you read my commentary on that poor, innocent duck?

  10. Shannon Says:

    Both!

  11. 8r4d Says:

And, as an update, yes: we bought a Mac over the weekend, and one of my first purchases that evening was a license for Scrivener. I won’t say yet that I “love it” but it is definitely growing on me. I’ll post a review when I’ve used it a bit more.
