Monumental Icons

December 16

I came across an image the other day that was some art — or a screen-cap — or something from the Lord of the Rings. Remember in the first movie when they are in the boats going along the river? And the river takes them between the two massive statues of some ancient dudes standing extending their hands straight outwards? And at that moment there is this perfect sort of imagery because the group around which the story is focusing seems so insignificant? There they are, this small group of adventurers, and suddenly they are just tiny in the grand sense of space and time.

Day 16: Looking at things from a different perspective…

Tolkien, and others both before and since, did something that I’ve been pondering how to achieve in my own project. In one short span of time they created this sense of something important happening in the midst of a inexplicably vast and complex historical backdrop.

Sure, Frodo is important. But just think about who built those monuments!

The trick about my ‘little project’ is that it is something of a metaverse, inasmuch as that word refers to a general sort of abstract, fictional reality. I’m attempting to write a series of stories and fragments that all take place among this vast overarching story of this, for lack of a better work, ‘place’ that I’ve invented.

I was thinking about monuments, icons, and other grand things that civilizations create and leave behind. In stories, these things can add another level of depth to the so-called metaverse that has been created. At least, I think so. One of my goals before I dive too deeply into the writing part is to do some more research on these types of things; You know, grand elements that are not the focus of the story but that imply history. I’m not talking ‘Ringworld’ or ‘Hyperion’ here, where the monuments are the focus. But the bits that pop up (put there by the author or those interpreting the work) that imply history.

If anyone has any curious examples, please let me know.
