How do you write with a baby on your lap?

From Friday, September 28th, 2007, so about 431 days ago, [Popularity: 10%]

I’m learning.

Six days in, I’m starting to figure this all out.

I suppose there have been a lot of people coming here looking for more information on the exact details of the birth. I suppose that you have all been reloading the site hoping that I’ll post something to tell you the story of the new little girl we have living with us. We’re a family of three (plus dog) now, and it’s been enough of a change that we might almost have something interesting to write about.

But how does one switch into that mode? It’s the question of “firsts” and such. The first post after becoming a dad is, well, this one, and it’s about as coherent and revealing as I can be at the moment.

Things went well. I didn’t go through the labour so it’s not my place to say it was easy. It wasn’t. But on the scale of 1 to 10 of scenarios, where ten is the best case and one is the worst case… I gotta say, it seemed to be about an 8 or a 9. Sure, we came in on the tail-end of a busy day at the hospital. Sure, it took a while for Karin to get some pain control. But after that… We had a bit of a nap, I went for a short breakfast, things moved very quickly, and twelve hours of labour and thirty minutes of pushing right before lunch popped a screaming, purple kid into my arms.

We were home 24 hours later.

And our lives suddenly revolve around this little bundle of sometimes-sleeping, occasionally-crying, always-delicate ball of baby wrapped in flannel.

I haven’t found time for much else, and I don’t feel especially guilty. I’ve neglected my blog. I’ve been horrible at returning emails. I haven’t written a word. I’ve only found time to leaf through a few magazines and occasionally read aloud to Claire while she’s feeding, but my books are sitting alone on the shelf for the moment. The most productive thing I’ve been able to accomplish is getting caught up with some recorded TV and playing video games with a kid on my chest. It works, don’t laugh. It’s been busy. It’s been interesting.

So that’s that. I’m sitting here at the computer with my little baby girl draped over my chest as I type. Weird that.

Isn’t it wonderful? :) Changes everything, becoming a parent, doesn’t it? But in good ways. :) Glad you aren’t feeling guilty….enjoy every possible moment with her….the time passes so quickly before the baby days are over (though sometimes you won’t feel that way, in the moment). :)
