Why I still use my own Gallery…

From Monday, September 10th, 2007, so about 397 days ago, [Popularity: 18%]

A couple people asked why I don’t upload more photos to Facebook, rather than making people click over to my gallery site. Here are my reasons, and I don’t think I need to justify any further than that:

1. Users. Facebook needs a password. My gallery is open. As much as I’d find it amusing to manipulate my mother-in-law into getting a Facebook account, it’s just not worth it in the end.

2. Money. I’m paying good money to rent a hosted server. I’m gonna darn well use it.

3. Terms. Keep the following paragraph from the Facebook Terms of Use in mind whenever you upload something to Facebook. (Emphasis mine.)

When you post User Content to the Site, you authorize and direct us to make such copies thereof as we deem necessary in order to facilitate the posting and storage of the User Content on the Site. By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing. You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content.

4. Quantity. I have a lot of pictures. I take a lot of pictures.

Four reasons. Is that enough? I’ll keep control of my content as is, thank you very much. Enough said.

Well, all that, and Gallery2 is a far better photo interface, both for browsing and management, particularly for large photo sets. Yeah, Facebook is great if you want to just broadcast a single shot to a bunch of people, which amounts to nothing more than photo blogging, but if your goal is to publish complete albums, Facebook is, IMHO, the wrong tool for the job.

I’ve looked at Flickr, too. But with 5100+ photos, I’m in pretty deep with gallery.

I disagree. I find Facebook way easier to post photos to than the experience I had with gallery2. Not that I dont like the full control that I can have with gallery2 compared to facebook, but I need something that is more in the middle of both.
