IMPORTED FROM OUR TRAVEL BLOG: Brad, Karin (and Ryan) Do Europe ‘06
So, it’s our full free day in Budapest, Hungary. And it’s hot. Last night we bussed into our hotel, had an hour or so to change and refresh, then reloaded for a driving tour of the city (including the fisherman’s bastion and a monument atop a hill overlooking the city) before boarding a river cruise on the Danube. We had a meal on board, dranks lots of Hungarian wine, and finally topped the evening off discussing international affairs with some of the tour folks in the bar.
This morning we finally got to sleep in a little (but only because we woke up to a downpour at about 7 AM and went back to bed), but this morning we’ve gone touring the city. Karin and I took the metro downtown Pest (the east side of the river) and visited St Stevens Bascillica, walked along the river, and are now stopping to check some email before finding lunch. This afternoon we’re hoping to cross the river into Buda (the west side) and explore the cultural/castle area of the city.
We’re not too sure where Ryan is. We gave him a little bit of cash (cuz he spent most of it on beer last night) and he went partying with the crew last night. Hopefully he made it back to the hotel before 4 AM with the rest of them.
Looking forward to some more sightseeing today, and then tomorrow we’ll be off to Poland (bright and early!) via Slovak Republic. By the way, the conversion rate to the local currency is about 200 Fl to 1 Can$. So we’re walking around with 10,000 FL bills in our pocket and feeling quite affluent. Also, we both have been quite surprised with how modern some of these former communist cities have become. Not what we expected.
Ciao for now…
