There has been a wee bit of confusion. I’ve been resistant — for the not-quite-obvious-reason that I’m already paying for a lot of hosted webspace, so why would I — to switch to a more familiar service like Flickr for my photo galleries. Recently, I updated my gallery software to Gallery2, a relatively major update to the software I was using before (and I suppose I still am, in some quiet corner of the web.) That said, you may notice that most of my links still lead to the original gallery.8r4d.com site, green-devil, photoland. This is because there are still some issues that (given the appropriate amount of free time) will soon be remedied:
You’ll know when I get these working. But like I said: check it out and leave me a note or a comment if there is something else that is bugging you. I want to get this thing in full swing soon. |

And when I wonder what would I do if Flickr changed their terms or something and I lost access to my gallery (or a portion of the several thousnd photos) - I would be quite…disquieted. IF I run it myself on a site like this, then I can be responsible for parts of it, and at least run a nightly cronjob consisting of mysqldump and rsync commands, and keep a local copy on my personal computer.
That’s the plan. I still have several thousand photos to upgrade to gallery2
And if I go with Flickr, I still have to somehow get the photos onto their site (and with captions too). That may be a bigger challenge than upgrading to Gallery2 (which so far has been straightforward - just a few titles to clean up)
My Flickr account will remain for snippets from the gallery, but the main gallery will be on my turf.
Maybe someday, someone will write a plugin for gallery2 that integrates the two more closely (i.e., then I can take advantage of load-sharing between the two services. The load-balancing part is already in gallery, someone just needs to figure out a way to sync photos and links)
So, I follow you Brad. I am just a bit behind in getting it done. (Well, actually, a lot is done. You just can’t see it yet).
