Last night - at about quarter past ten - I thought that we were being bombed. I was sitting in bed reading, relaxing, and letting the warm spring breezing push through the windows and cool down my overheated apartment. There was a loud “boom” - followed quickly by another, and another, and then about a hundred more over the next five minutes. Meanwhile - as I could not see anything that might be causing this noise, the wall-shuddering explosion-like sounds - I had put my shoes on and went for a short stroll around the block. Everyone was trying to see over the houses and buildings to catch a glimpse of the source of the noise, but to no avail. This morning, I ask casually over coffee break if anyone knew what the noise was: Apparently someone was having a private boat party - someone rich, of course - and they had done a big fireworks display. It was unannounced to avoid crowds, and had taken place just down in False Creek, close enough to make it sound as though someone was bombing downtown. Well, you never know, do you? |
