…on this bombing incident in Afganistan. The perception is initially anger, but: ( 1 ) The American media seems to be doing a much more thorough job of covering this story than the Canadian media. But is this just something that we should expect? Four Canadians killed by an American bomb: eight more injured and in hospital. Perhaps it is some sort of penance by the Yanks, offering these blanket appologies and at least pretending that they care about it. I suppose we will see how much coverage it continues to recieve, and more importantly, how often they try and shift responsibility. I think they are just more concerned over having wasted an expensive bomb. ( 2 ) I have been saying since this started that we should not have Canadian soldiers over there. I seem to remember writing something like “bring them home, now” only a few weeks ago. I hate to be the guy sitting here typing “I told you so” repeatedly into this website but I really don’t think this is, should be, or ever will be our war. Despite the mumbles of the PM this is not the price of our freedom, and this was more than an unfortunate accident. We are showing this support for a revenge mission: the Yanks had their pride bruised and are lashing out at an invisible enemy they have called terrorism. We are being dragged along for the ride: soldiers being killed for the first time in 50 years, a big waste of government money, and an excuse to hit us with another fee for flying the “friendly skies.” Why? Because someone outsmarted the States? ( 3 ) It’s fair to say that if the tables had been turned: in other words Americans killed by Canadians - there would have been some very agressive feelings towards us right now: the only thing they would be growing in Saskatchewan this morning would be mushroom clouds, and our gibbering PM would be hanging atop the CN tower in Toronto. We seem to be taking a lot from our bully neighbors to the south: sure their sorry, but what are they gonna do about it? How about a sign of good faith and drop those lumber tariffs. And I’ll be interested to see if any American deligations rush up here to console the families grieving over their lost family… |
